Japanese calligraphy class 2025

Today, besides our usual textbook studies, we had a practical lesson in Japanese calligraphy.

書道 (しょどう、shodō)ー Japanese calligraphy

The teacher began by explaining how to use the tools of calligraphy. He introduced the process of making ink, and everyone had the chance to grind their own ink. He also demonstrated the correct way to hold the brush and which side of the paper to write on.

In Japanese elementary schools, calligraphy classes are a common part of the curriculum. Today, we got to experience what it’s like to be a Japanese elementary school student.

Of course, practice came first! Students started by drawing loops and lines to perfect their brush strokes. Then, they moved on to writing kanji. Some chose kanji suggested by the teacher, while others went with their own ideas. The most popular word of the day was “family” – 家族 (かぞく, kazoku).
